Shopify AI: the short answer
Shopify AI, as used here, means an AI client such as Claude or ChatGPT connected to your store over MCP. It can read orders, products, inventory, customers and discounts, and change them when you ask. Connect Klaviyo, Meta Ads, GA4 or Okendo as well and one prompt can draw on several of them.
Which Shopify MCP server do you need?
Shopify publishes several MCP servers. Only the first row below is for a merchant managing their own store. If MCP is new to you, read what MCP is first.
| Option | Who it is for | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify connector for Claude, Shopify plugin for ChatGPT | Merchants | Shopify's own. Creates and updates products and collections, checks and sets inventory, creates percentage-off discount codes, reads orders and customers, answers analytics questions. No extra Shopify fee. |
| UCP servers: Storefront Catalog, Cart MCP, Checkout MCP, Order MCP | Developers building shopping agents | Act on behalf of buyers: search one store's catalog, build a cart, complete checkout, fetch an order. Served at https://{shop}/api/ucp/mcp. |
| Customer Accounts MCP | Developers serving signed-in shoppers | Order status, order details and account preferences for one customer. Uses OAuth 2.0 with PKCE. |
| Dev MCP (Shopify AI Toolkit) | Developers | Connects coding tools to Shopify's developer docs and API schemas. Runs locally. |
Shopify removed the catalog and cart tools from its older Storefront MCP endpoint, https://{shop}/api/mcp. They now live in the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) servers in row two. A guide that still sends you to the old endpoint for catalog search is out of date.
When Shopify's own connector is the better pick
If you run one store and only need Shopify, use Shopify's connector. It takes one install and an approval in your Shopify admin, with no extra Shopify fee.
It also answers analytics questions directly. PopMCP's Shopify server has no report tool. The model lists orders and does the sums itself.
Where it stops
Shopify says its connector reads orders but does not change them. It cannot issue refunds, cancel or capture orders, mark orders as paid, process returns or edit your live theme. It also changes items one at a time, so a large batch can stop partway.
When a hosted MCP server fits
A hosted server such as PopMCP fits three cases:
- You want Shopify next to email, ads, analytics or reviews in the same chat.
- You run several stores.
- You need an order action that Shopify's connector blocks.
PopMCP's Shopify server has 70 operations. 28 load by default. The rest, including shopify_create_order_refund and shopify_cancel_order, are found through shopify_search_tools.
Setup is heavier than Shopify's connector. You create an app in your Shopify Dev Dashboard, then give PopMCP the store domain, Client ID and Client secret.
12 Shopify AI prompts and the tools behind them
The tool names are from PopMCP's Shopify server. Another Shopify MCP server will name them differently, but the prompts carry over. Swap in your own products, collections and thresholds.
Nine of the twelve only read. Prompts 4, 5 and 8 write. PopMCP's Free plan is read-only, so those three need Starter or above, or the 14-day Studio trial every new account starts on.
Nothing here runs on a schedule. PopMCP does not schedule prompts, so a "morning brief" runs when someone asks for it.
1. Yesterday's sales brief
Summarize yesterday's orders: revenue, order count, average order
value, top 5 products by units, and any order over $500. Compare
with the same weekday last week.Calls shopify_get_orders, once for each of the two days. Read only. The model adds up revenue from raw orders, so check the total against your Shopify admin the first few times.
2. Low-stock list
List variants with under 14 days of stock at the Sydney warehouse,
based on units sold in the last 30 days. Show on-hand units, daily
sales rate and days left.Calls shopify_get_locations, shopify_get_inventory_levels and shopify_get_orders. Read only. Shopify holds stock per location, so name the location.
"Days left" is the model's own arithmetic on 30 days of orders. It knows nothing about stock on order, unless you also connect an inventory system such as Cin7, which has cin7_list_purchase_orders.
3. Product catalog audit
Find active products with no images, a description under 50 words,
or no product type. Return a table with the product title and what
is missing.Calls shopify_get_products. Read only. On a large catalog, run it one collection at a time so the table stays short enough to check.
4. Rewrite a product description
Rewrite the description for the Merino Crew Tee in our brand voice,
under 120 words. Show me the draft and wait. Update the product only
after I reply "yes".Calls shopify_get_product, then shopify_update_product. This one writes.
PopMCP does not hold a write for approval. The update runs when the model calls the tool.
"Wait" in the prompt is an instruction to the model and nothing more. The dependable stop is your AI client's own confirmation prompt.
5. Price change across a collection
List every variant in the Winter collection with its current price
and the price after an 8% rise, rounded to .95. Change nothing yet.Check the table. Then send: Apply those prices and list every variant you changed.
Calls shopify_get_collection_products and shopify_get_product_variants, then shopify_update_variant once per variant. This one writes.
There is no bulk operation in the catalog. A collection with 200 variants is 200 calls. If the run stops halfway, half your prices have changed, which is why the second prompt asks for a list.
6. Order lookup for support
Find the latest order for jane@example.com. What did she buy, has
it shipped, and were there any refunds?Calls shopify_search_customers, shopify_get_customer_orders, shopify_get_fulfillment_orders and shopify_get_order_refunds. Read only.
PopMCP can also refund, through shopify_create_order_refund. It moves money the moment the model calls it. Think hard before a support seat gets write access.
7. Lapsed high-value customers
List customers with 3 or more orders and over $400 lifetime spend
whose last order was more than 90 days ago. Include email, order
count, total spent and last order date.Calls shopify_search_customers and shopify_get_customer_orders. Read only. Asking for each customer's most-bought product adds one more call per customer, so add it only for a short list.
8. Send that list to Klaviyo
Create a Klaviyo list called "VIP win-back Oct" and add the customers
from your last answer. Tell me how many were added and how many
were skipped.Calls klaviyo_create_list, klaviyo_create_or_update_profile and klaviyo_add_profiles_to_list on the Klaviyo server. This one writes, in Klaviyo.
Being on a list is not the same as having opted in. Klaviyo's API docs point to a separate Subscribe Profiles endpoint for recording marketing consent. Add only people who already agreed to hear from you.
9. Discount clean-up
List every price rule and its discount codes. Flag rules with no
end date and rules worth more than 30% off.Calls shopify_get_price_rules and shopify_get_discount_codes. Read only. Ending a rule is a write, through shopify_update_price_rule.
10. Review themes for your best sellers
For our 10 best-selling products in the last 30 days, pull the
Okendo rating, review count and review keywords. Flag any product
under 4.2 stars and list its most common complaints.Calls shopify_get_orders to rank products, then okendo_get_product_review_aggregate, okendo_get_product_reviews_keywords and okendo_list_product_reviews on the Okendo server. Read only. The Okendo tools return published reviews only.
11. Meta Ads spend against Shopify revenue
For each of the last 14 days, show Meta Ads spend, Meta-reported
purchases and purchase value next to Shopify order count and
revenue. Which days disagree most?Calls meta_ads_get_account_insights on the Meta Ads server and shopify_get_orders. Read only.
Expect a gap. An ad platform reports the purchases it credits to its ads, and Shopify reports every order. The useful part is which days the gap widens.
12. GA4 landing pages against products
From GA4, pull sessions, purchases and revenue by landing page for
last month. For the 10 product pages with the most sessions, show
the Shopify product, its price and whether it is in stock. Flag
pages with high traffic and few purchases.Calls ga4_run_report on the GA4 server, then shopify_get_products and shopify_get_inventory_levels. Read only. The model matches page paths to products itself, so spot-check a few rows.

Before you let it write
PopMCP has no approval step. A write runs when the model calls it, so the stop has to come from somewhere else.
- Try a read first, and check the answer against your Shopify admin.
- Keep your AI client's confirmation on. Claude shows a tool approval request, and its help page says to click "Allow always" only for tools you trust to run unsupervised. ChatGPT developer mode asks for confirmation on write actions by default.
- Keep reporting seats read-only. On Starter and Studio, teammates other than the owner already are. On Scale and Enterprise the owner sets read-only or full access per teammate, per connection.
- Tick Shopify only for the AI clients that need it. Each client signs in separately and reaches only the connectors you ticked on the consent screen.
Afterwards, usage analytics show requests and outcomes by connection, teammate and tool. Free keeps 7 days of history.
How to set it up
- Connect Shopify in PopMCP. Create an app in your Shopify Dev Dashboard and paste PopMCP's two URLs into its URL settings. Then enter the store domain, Client ID and Client secret, and approve.
- Add a second tool if you want prompts 8 and 10 to 12. Klaviyo takes a private API key and Okendo takes your Okendo User ID. Meta Ads takes a System User access token. GA4 needs your own Google OAuth client.
- Add
https://app.popmcp.com/mcpto your AI client. It opens a PopMCP sign-in, and you tick which connectors that client can reach. There is no token to paste. See the Claude steps. - Run prompt 1. Compare the numbers with your Shopify admin before you trust the rest.
If you run several stores, each store is its own connection, and a workspace holds one connection per provider. Two stores means two workspaces. See MCP for agencies.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify have an official MCP server?
Yes, several. Merchants get the Shopify connector for Claude and the Shopify plugin for ChatGPT. Developers get the UCP servers for catalog, cart, checkout and orders, plus the Customer Accounts MCP server and the Dev MCP server.
Can Claude connect to my Shopify store?
Yes. Install Shopify's connector for Claude, or add a hosted MCP server such as PopMCP as a custom connector. Claude's custom connectors work on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, with Free limited to one.
Can AI issue refunds or cancel orders in Shopify?
Not through Shopify's own connector, which blocks refunds, cancellations, captures and returns. PopMCP's Shopify catalog includes shopify_create_order_refund and shopify_cancel_order. Both act the moment the model calls them.
Is it safe to let AI edit my Shopify store?
It is safer with three habits: try a read first, keep your AI client's confirmation prompt on for writes, and give write access to as few seats as you can. PopMCP itself does not hold a write for review.
Can AI combine Shopify data with Klaviyo or Meta Ads?
Yes, when both are connected to the same AI client. With PopMCP they sit behind one URL, so one prompt can call Shopify tools and Klaviyo tools in turn. The model does the joining, so check the result.
Can AI run my Shopify reports on a schedule?
Not through PopMCP. It does not schedule prompts, so one runs when someone sends it. For a fixed nightly job, a script or a workflow tool that calls the Shopify API directly is the better fit.
What happened to Shopify's Storefront MCP?
Shopify removed its catalog and cart tools and moved them to the Universal Commerce Protocol servers at https://{shop}/api/ucp/mcp. Those servers act for shoppers. They are not for managing your own store.
