Semrush MCP server questions

What teams ask before putting Semrush behind an AI client.

Where do I find the API key the connect form asks for?

In Semrush, open Account → Subscription info → the API Units tab and copy the key shown there. Paste it into the single API Key field on the connect form. There is no OAuth redirect, no client secret and no token to refresh. The key is stored encrypted and travels server-side over HTTPS.

Does one key cover Site Audit and Position Tracking, or only the report APIs?

One key covers all of it. The same value reaches the Analytics API behind the domain, keyword, URL and backlinks reports, the v4 REST endpoints, Trends and Traffic Analytics, and the Projects API that backs Site Audit and Position Tracking. Projects is the largest module in this connection, so most of what an agent can do with campaigns lives there.

Do I need to know Semrush column codes and database codes to use this?

No. Each report is exposed as its own tool with defaults already set for column codes, the regional database and row limits, so a plain-English request resolves without you naming an export string. The semicolon-CSV responses Semrush returns are parsed into clean JSON before the agent reads them, which is the part that usually trips people up when they call this API directly.

How many domains or keywords can one call cover?

It depends on the report. traffic_summary takes up to 200 domains, subdomains or subfolders in a single pass, domain_vs_domain compares up to five domains side by side with each keyword's position in every one, and batch_keyword_overview takes up to 100 phrases. Lists larger than those need more than one request.

How much of Semrush does the connection expose, and how much of it can write?

110 operations across 6 API modules: Projects, Trends, Backlinks, Domain, Keyword and URL. 41 load into your AI client by default and the rest stay searchable, so a large catalog does not sit in context on every call. 97 of the operations read and only 13 write, and the writes are the ones worth putting behind approval.

Which Semrush changes can PopMCP watch for?

Threshold watches cover organic traffic dropped, ranking keywords changed sharply, tracked keyword lost positions, search visibility dropped, site health score dropped, site errors climbing, backlinks lost, and website visits dropped. Each fires when the metric crosses a level you set, so a visibility slide or a spike in crawl errors reaches your agent instead of waiting for someone to open a dashboard.

Do I have to run or host the Semrush MCP server myself?

No. PopMCP hosts it and gives you a Streamable HTTP MCP URL. There is nothing to deploy, no callback URL to register, and no infrastructure to keep running or patch.

Which AI clients can use this MCP server?

Any client that supports a remote Streamable HTTP MCP server — Claude Desktop, Claude Web, ChatGPT custom connectors, Codex and the Codex CLI, OpenCode and Z.ai's ZCode, as well as editors such as Cursor, Windsurf and Zed. Your client signs in to PopMCP with OAuth; the provider credential never leaves the server.

Why do only 41 of the 110 tools load by default?

Loading 110 tool definitions into every conversation burns context before the work starts. PopMCP loads a curated 41-tool set covering the everyday workflows and keeps the rest searchable, so your AI pulls a specialist tool only when a task needs it. You can switch a connection to the full catalog at any time.

What is the difference between a tool and a trigger?

A tool is something your AI calls — there are 110 here. A trigger is something PopMCP watches for you: 8 Semrush events that can start work on the PopMCP side. Triggers never enter your AI client's context, and none of them ask you to paste a callback URL into Semrush.
