Ahrefs MCP server questions

What teams ask before putting Ahrefs behind an AI client.

Do I need a particular Ahrefs plan for this?

Yes. API access requires an Ahrefs Enterprise plan, and the key you paste has to come from a workspace on that plan. No gateway can work around that — if the workspace has no API access, there is no key to connect with.

Where does the API key come from, and will I have to reconnect later?

You copy the key out of Ahrefs and paste it into the single API key field on the connect form. There is no OAuth popup and no refresh token, so the connection keeps working until that key changes or expires. Ask for subscription_info_limits_and_usage if you want to see the key's expiry date before it catches you out.

How do Ahrefs API units affect what my agent can run?

Ahrefs meters usage in API units against your key, and running the calls through an agent spends the same units a script would. subscription_info_limits_and_usage returns the current plan plus unit limits and usage for that key and workspace. Check it before a large batch_analysis or a full site_explorer_all_backlinks pull if you are close to a ceiling.

Can the agent change anything in my Ahrefs workspace?

Almost everything here is reading: 128 of the 145 operations are reads, and the 17 writes live in workspace Management — projects, keyword lists, tracked competitors and reports. Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, SERP and Site Audit results are read-only by nature. Set the connection to read-only, or require approval on writes, and an agent can report all day without touching your setup.

Can it analyze domains I don't own?

Yes, and that is most of the value. Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer and SERP data work on any domain or URL, site_explorer_organic_competitors and serp_overview profile whoever outranks you, batch_analysis takes up to 100 domains or URLs in one call, and public_domain_rating_free returns a free DR. Only the project-based data — Rank Tracker, Site Audit, Web Analytics and Search Console — is limited to projects inside your own workspace.

Why do Web Analytics, Rank Tracker and Search Console questions need a project first?

Those endpoints are scoped to projects configured in your workspace, not to a bare domain string. management_projects returns the project ids, mode, keyword counts and Web Analytics data keys for Rank Tracker, Web Analytics and GSC projects, and site_audit_projects returns Site Audit projects with health score and crawl status. Point your agent at those two first, or it has nothing to look the project up by.

Do I have to run or host the Ahrefs MCP server myself?

No. PopMCP hosts it and gives you a Streamable HTTP MCP URL. There is nothing to deploy, no callback URL to register, and no infrastructure to keep running or patch.

Which AI clients can use this MCP server?

Any client that supports a remote Streamable HTTP MCP server — Claude Desktop, Claude Web, ChatGPT custom connectors, Codex and the Codex CLI, OpenCode and Z.ai's ZCode, as well as editors such as Cursor, Windsurf and Zed. Your client signs in to PopMCP with OAuth; the provider credential never leaves the server.

Why do only 30 of the 145 tools load by default?
