What teams ask before putting Smartsheet behind an AI client.

What do I need to connect the Smartsheet MCP server?

A Smartsheet API access token on a Business or Enterprise plan. In Smartsheet select Account (your picture at the bottom left), then Personal settings, API access and Generate new access token, name it PopMCP and copy it right away: Smartsheet shows it only once. PopMCP checks it, finds your region and stores it encrypted.

Does it work with Smartsheet in Europe, Australia or Smartsheet Gov?

Yes. Each region is a separate Smartsheet with its own address and its own tokens. PopMCP tries your token on each one and remembers the region that accepts it, so you never pick a region and every request goes straight to the right place.

Can the AI use column names instead of column ids?

Yes. Smartsheet's API addresses every cell by a numeric column id, so PopMCP adds tools that work by column name: smartsheet_get_records reads rows as simple records with filters, and smartsheet_add_records and smartsheet_update_records write them, converting checkboxes, dropdown lists, contacts and formulas for you. smartsheet_find turns a sheet's name into its id.

What can the AI see in my Smartsheet?

Exactly what is shared with the Smartsheet user whose token you connect, at the level it is shared: Viewer, Commenter, Editor, Admin or Owner. Connecting PopMCP never widens that. System Admin features such as user management and Event Reporting only work when that user is a System Admin.

Can it upload files and import spreadsheets?

Yes. The AI can attach a file or a link to a sheet, row or comment, upload new versions, add images to cells and import a CSV or Excel file as a new sheet, from text, base64 or a public https link PopMCP downloads (up to 25 MB, inside Smartsheet's own 30 MB limit).

Are there limits I should know about?

Smartsheet allows 300 requests a minute per token, and 30 a minute for file uploads and cell history; PopMCP retries a rate-limited call for you. One request adds or updates up to 500 rows, and PopMCP's row tools split bigger jobs into batches of that size.

Can PopMCP react when a row changes?

Yes. Smartsheet sends events for a sheet when its rows, cells, columns, comments or attachments change, and PopMCP lists those as triggers for the sheets you choose, alongside watches for new sheets, reports, dashboards and workspaces and for summary numbers crossing a level.

Do I have to run or host the Smartsheet MCP server myself?

No. PopMCP hosts it and gives you a Streamable HTTP MCP URL. There is nothing to deploy, no callback URL to register, and no infrastructure to keep running or patch.

Which AI clients can use this MCP server?

Any client that supports a remote Streamable HTTP MCP server: Claude Desktop, Claude Web, Claude Code, ChatGPT custom connectors, Codex and the Codex CLI, OpenCode and Z.ai's ZCode, as well as editors such as Cursor, Windsurf and Zed. Your client signs in to PopMCP with OAuth; the provider credential never leaves the server.

How do I connect Smartsheet to Claude Code?

Connect Smartsheet in PopMCP first, then run claude mcp add --transport http popmcp https://app.popmcp.com/mcp in a terminal. Inside Claude Code, run /mcp and sign in to PopMCP in the browser window it opens, ticking Smartsheet on the consent screen. The Smartsheet tools are then available in that session, and no Smartsheet credential is stored on your machine.

Why do only 37 of the 186 tools load by default?

Loading 186 tool definitions into every conversation burns context before the work starts. PopMCP loads a curated 37-tool set covering the everyday workflows and keeps the rest searchable, so your AI pulls a specialist tool only when a task needs it. Every tool stays searchable, and on Scale the owner can load the full catalog for a teammate's connection.

What is the difference between a tool and a trigger?

A tool is something your AI calls, and there are 186 here. A trigger is something PopMCP watches for you: 24 Smartsheet events that can start work on the PopMCP side. Triggers never enter your AI client's context, and none of them ask you to paste a callback URL into Smartsheet.
