Mixpanel MCP server questions

What teams ask before putting Mixpanel behind an AI client.

How does PopMCP authenticate with Mixpanel — OAuth or a pasted key?

It uses a Service Account, Mixpanel's recommended method, so there is no OAuth redirect and no token to refresh. You create the account in Organization Settings → Service Accounts (org level, not inside a project) and paste the Service Account username, Service Account secret and the numeric Project ID. Project Token and GDPR OAuth Token are optional fields you can leave blank.

Can one connection query more than one Mixpanel project?

No. The Project ID you paste at setup is auto-filled on every query, so the connection stays locked to that single project. If you work across several projects, connect each one separately and the agent picks the connection rather than guessing a project ID.

Does this work if our data lives in the EU or India?

Yes. The connect form has an optional Data region field that accepts us, eu, or in, so an EU or India project is set once at connect time rather than per query. It sits on the same form as the service account credentials and the Project ID.

Can the agent write into Mixpanel, or is it read-only?

Both are available and you choose per connection. Of the 105 operations, 44 read and 61 write — writes cover ingestion (track, batch import, user and group profiles, lookup tables), identity, Lexicon schemas and annotations. Set the connection to read-only if you only want reporting, or keep full access with approval required for writes.

Is warehouse import and experiment work covered, or only reporting?

Warehouse imports are the largest module here — creating event stream, groups, lookup table and people imports, running them, and reading import history. Experiment management, experiment actions and flag management are covered too, alongside the Query API, raw Event Export and Lexicon schemas.

Why doesn't my AI client show all the tools at once?

29 of the 105 operations load by default so the tool list stays small enough for a client to reason over. The rest stay searchable, and the agent pulls one in when a request needs it. If you would rather have everything exposed up front, switch on the full-catalog toggle for the connection.

Do I have to run or host the Mixpanel MCP server myself?

No. PopMCP hosts it and gives you a Streamable HTTP MCP URL. There is nothing to deploy, no callback URL to register, and no infrastructure to keep running or patch.

Which AI clients can use this MCP server?

Any client that supports a remote Streamable HTTP MCP server — Claude Desktop, Claude Web, ChatGPT custom connectors, Codex and the Codex CLI, OpenCode and Z.ai's ZCode, as well as editors such as Cursor, Windsurf and Zed. Your client signs in to PopMCP with OAuth; the provider credential never leaves the server.

Why do only 29 of the 105 tools load by default?

Loading 105 tool definitions into every conversation burns context before the work starts. PopMCP loads a curated 29-tool set covering the everyday workflows and keeps the rest searchable, so your AI pulls a specialist tool only when a task needs it. You can switch a connection to the full catalog at any time.

What is the difference between a tool and a trigger?

A tool is something your AI calls — there are 105 here. A trigger is something PopMCP watches for you: 9 Mixpanel events that can start work on the PopMCP side. Triggers never enter your AI client's context, and none of them ask you to paste a callback URL into Mixpanel.
