Hotjar MCP server for your AI

Ask what people said in a survey, get last month's NPS, pull every complaint about shipping, or export the responses to a spreadsheet, without opening Hotjar.

PopMCPHotjar

What surveys do we have switched on across our sites right now?

Supported Hotjar tools

Every endpoint in Hotjar's API, plus tools that filter responses by date, device, sentiment and words, which Hotjar's own API cannot do, and work out NPS and ratings for you. Hotjar's API has nothing for recordings or heatmaps, so those stay in Hotjar.

9 tools in the full catalog: 7 read and 2 write. 9 load by default, and the rest are found with tool search.

hotjar_export_survey_responses

Export a survey's responses as CSV, one column per question.

hotjar_find_survey

Find surveys by name, type or status, across every site on the connection.

hotjar_get_survey

Get one Hotjar survey with its questions: each question's id, text, type (reaction, long-text, short-text, single-option, multiple-option, email, rating-1-5, rating-1-7, nps, statement, thank-you), choices and labels.

hotjar_list_survey_responses

List one survey's responses, newest first, with each response's answers (question_id, answer, comment, tags, sentiment), device, browser, os, country, page, submit time, is_complete, user attributes and recording link.

hotjar_list_surveys

List the surveys on one Hotjar site, with each survey's id, name, type (link, full_screen or popover), enabled flag and dates.

hotjar_search_survey_responses

Search a survey's responses by date, device, country, sentiment, words, tag, visitor and more.

hotjar_summarize_survey

NPS, ratings, option counts, sentiment, tags, completion and a trend for one survey.

hotjar_delete_user_data

Permanently delete everything Hotjar holds on one person, for a privacy or GDPR request.

hotjar_request_user_data_report

Run a Hotjar user lookup: find the data Hotjar holds on one person and have the report emailed.

Connect Hotjar to Claude, ChatGPT and Claude Code

Credentials off one Hotjar screen, then an endpoint your client signs into. Nothing to deploy, and nothing to install.

In Hotjar open Settings, then API, choose the organization, name the key, select the scope and click Generate credentials. Paste the client ID and client secret into PopMCP. You can also add your site ID from the Sites & Organizations page, so your AI does not have to ask for it.

Use Hotjar from the assistant you already open

One hosted endpoint, registered once per client. The same tools and the same permissions, whichever window the request comes from.

Claude DesktopCustom connector

Add the PopMCP URL under Customize → Connectors and the tools appear in every chat.

Claude WebCustom connector

The same endpoint, registered in the browser. Nothing to install on the machine you are working from.

ChatGPTCustom connector

Register PopMCP as a custom connector, then let ChatGPT read and update the account.

CodexDesktop & CLI

Wire the endpoint into Codex or the Codex CLI when a task needs live business context, not a fixture.

OpenCodeCoding agent

Register the remote MCP server in OpenCode's config for terminal-first and scripted agent runs.

ZCodeDesktop app

Add PopMCP as an MCP server in Z.ai's desktop app and work the account from the same window.

Hotjar MCP server questions

What teams ask before putting Hotjar behind an AI client.

What does the Hotjar MCP server need to connect?

A Hotjar API key, which is a client ID and client secret. An organization admin makes one in Hotjar under Settings, then API. Paste both into PopMCP. There is no app to review and nothing to deploy. A key belongs to one organization.

Which Hotjar plan do I need?

Hotjar's API is part of its Scale plans. Ask Scale gets surveys and user lookup. Observe Scale gets user lookup only, so survey tools are refused on that plan. Other plans cannot use the API, and Hotjar sells Scale through its sales team.

Can my AI watch recordings or read heatmaps?

No. Hotjar's API has no endpoint for recordings, heatmaps, funnels or feedback widgets, so no connector built on it can read them. A survey response can carry a link to its recording, which you open in Hotjar. Surveys also cannot be created or edited through the API.

Why does it ask for a site ID?

Hotjar's API cannot list your sites, so PopMCP cannot find them for you. Add the site ID when you connect, or leave it empty and your AI will ask when it needs one. It is the number shown for each site on the Sites & Organizations page. If you add site IDs, your AI works with those sites only.

Can it filter survey responses by date?

Yes. Hotjar's API returns responses newest first with no filters, so PopMCP reads through them for you and stops at your start date. You can filter by date, device, country, sentiment, words in the answer, tag and more. A very long survey may need a narrower date range, and the answer says when it stopped early.

Does a user lookup or deletion do anything I should know about?

Yes. A lookup sends a real email to the person you look up and to your account's default recipient, and the report takes up to 24 hours. A deletion is permanent, sends no email and gives no list of what was removed. Both need write actions to be allowed, and a deletion also needs an explicit confirmation in the call.

Why did my connection stop working after a year?

Hotjar API keys expire one year after they are made and cannot be extended. Make a new key under Settings, then API, and connect again. PopMCP does not store anything that outlives the key.

Do I have to run or host the Hotjar MCP server myself?

No. PopMCP hosts it and gives you a Streamable HTTP MCP URL. There is nothing to deploy, no callback URL to register, and no infrastructure to keep running or patch.

Which AI clients can use this MCP server?

Any client that supports a remote Streamable HTTP MCP server: Claude Desktop, Claude Web, Claude Code, ChatGPT custom connectors, Codex and the Codex CLI, OpenCode and Z.ai's ZCode, as well as editors such as Cursor, Windsurf and Zed. Your client signs in to PopMCP with OAuth; the provider credential never leaves the server.

How do I connect Hotjar to Claude Code?

Connect Hotjar in PopMCP first, then run claude mcp add --transport http popmcp https://app.popmcp.com/mcp in a terminal. Inside Claude Code, run /mcp and sign in to PopMCP in the browser window it opens, ticking Hotjar on the consent screen. The Hotjar tools are then available in that session, and no Hotjar credential is stored on your machine.

Do all 9 Hotjar tools load by default?

Yes. The Hotjar catalog is small enough that all 9 tool definitions load into every conversation, so your AI never has to search for one before it can call it.

What is the difference between a tool and a trigger?

A tool is something your AI calls, and there are 9 here. A trigger is something PopMCP watches for you: 2 Hotjar events that can start work on the PopMCP side. Triggers never enter your AI client's context, and none of them ask you to paste a callback URL into Hotjar.
