Confluence MCP server questions

What teams ask before putting Confluence behind an AI client.

What does the Confluence MCP server need to connect?

Three things: your Confluence site (yourcompany.atlassian.net, or just yourcompany), the email you sign in to Atlassian with, and an API token. Create the token at id.atlassian.com under Security, then Create and manage API tokens. Any Confluence user can make one, it can last up to a year, and Atlassian shows it only once. The MCP works as you, so it sees and changes only what your Confluence account can.

Do Atlassian API tokens with scopes work?

Yes. A token made with Create API token with scopes is refused by your site itself, so when you connect PopMCP tries the site first, then Atlassian's API gateway with your site's cloud ID, and keeps whichever worked. A scoped token only allows what its scopes cover, for example read:page:confluence, read:space:confluence and read:comment:confluence for read-only use, plus the write scopes to change pages.

Can the AI write formatted pages, and read them back as text?

Yes. Space keys such as ENG work wherever Confluence wants a numeric space id, page links work wherever it wants a page id, and page updates fill in the version number Confluence requires.

Does it work with Confluence Server or Data Center?

No, Confluence Cloud only. The site field takes a yourcompany.atlassian.net address (older sites on jira.com work too) and refuses any other host, because your email and API token are sent to that address. Confluence Server and Data Center authenticate with personal access tokens on your company's own server, which this connector does not reach.
