What teams ask before putting Segment behind an AI client.

What Segment token does the MCP server need?

A Public API token. Create it in Segment under Settings → Workspace settings → Access Management → Tokens → Create Token, choose Public API and give it the Workspace Owner role so every tool works; a narrower role also connects, and areas outside it answer 403. A Config API token or a source write key won't connect, and the Public API needs a Segment Team or Business plan. The token doesn't expire and covers one Segment workspace, so a second Segment workspace needs its own PopMCP workspace.

Do I need Segment source write keys to send track and identify events?

No. Every tracking tool, from identify_user and track_event to send_batch, takes a sourceId (or the Source's slug or name), and PopMCP reads that Source's write key through the Public API. A write key the AI supplies is never used, so events only go to Sources in the connected workspace. If the Source is disabled or has no write key, the call stops with a message pointing at update_source or create_write_key_for_source.

Does the Segment MCP server work with EU workspaces?

Yes, with nothing to configure. When you connect, PopMCP tries the token against Segment's US and EU hosts and keeps the region that recognises it. Public API, Tracking API and Profile API calls all follow that region from then on, and an EU connection is labelled (EU) in PopMCP.

Why does Segment return 200 for events that never show up?

Segment's Tracking API accepts calls first and drops invalid ones later. PopMCP checks every message before it is sent: a call with no userId or anonymousId, a track call with no event name, or a message over 32 KB comes back as a clear error instead of a silent 200. It also converts unix timestamps to ISO 8601, adds a messageId so a retried call isn't counted twice, and caps send_batch at 2,500 messages and 500 KB.

Can the AI look up one customer's Segment profile and recent events?

Yes, once you add the optional Profile API token. Generate it in Segment under Unify → Unify settings → API access, and PopMCP works out which space it belongs to. get_user_traits, get_user_events and get_user_external_ids then accept a plain email or user id, and get_user_events covers the last 14 days only, which is all Segment keeps there. Without that token, spaces, audiences and computed traits still work through the Public API.

How do I find out why events aren't reaching a Segment destination?

Ask for Delivery Overview. get_delivery_overview_egress_failed shows events from a Source that failed to reach a Destination, grouped by discard reason on request, and get_delivery_overview_ingress_failed shows what the Source rejected on arrival, such as invalid or oversized events or ones blocked by a tracking plan. Both default to the last 24 hours by hour, and get_events_volume_from_workspace defaults to the last 7 days by day, so the AI doesn't have to pick a window.

Do I have to run or host the Segment MCP server myself?

No. PopMCP hosts it and gives you a Streamable HTTP MCP URL. There is nothing to deploy, no callback URL to register, and no infrastructure to keep running or patch.

Which AI clients can use this MCP server?

Any client that supports a remote Streamable HTTP MCP server: Claude Desktop, Claude Web, ChatGPT custom connectors, Codex and the Codex CLI, OpenCode and Z.ai's ZCode, as well as editors such as Cursor, Windsurf and Zed. Your client signs in to PopMCP with OAuth; the provider credential never leaves the server.

Why do only 50 of the 219 tools load by default?

What is the difference between a tool and a trigger?

A tool is something your AI calls, and there are 219 here. A trigger is an event PopMCP watches for on its own. Segment has no triggers yet, so everything on this page happens when your AI calls a tool.
