Modash MCP server questions

What teams ask before putting Modash behind an AI client.

What does the Modash MCP server need to connect?

One Modash API token, from marketer.modash.io/developer. It needs a Modash API plan, which Modash sells separately from its app, by contract, with no self-serve sign-up: you book a call with their team, who can also give you testing credits. Nothing else is needed: no developer app and no OAuth.

What do these tools cost?

They spend your Modash balance, and every tool description states its price so the AI can see it first. Search costs 0.01 credits per result, usually 0.15 a page. AI search and lookalikes cost 0.025 per result. A report costs 1 credit, performance data 0.25, collaborations 0.2 and an email lookup 0.02 per match. Dictionaries, lists and the balance check are free, and Modash does not charge for failed calls. The Raw API counts requests rather than credits.

What is the difference between Discovery and Raw?

Discovery is Modash's own database: search, reports, audience data and collaborations, refreshed every few weeks. Raw fetches public posts, comments and profiles live from Instagram, TikTok and YouTube when you ask. Modash sells them separately on one token. If your plan has only one, the tools for the other are refused with a message saying so, and the rest keep working.

Do I need to look up ids for places, brands and interests?

The AI does it for you: lookup_filter_ids turns names such as London or Nike into the ids the search tools want, for free. AI search uses a separate set of location and brand ids, and the same tool fetches the right kind. Wherever a creator is asked for, a handle, an id or a profile link all work.

Can read-only stop the AI spending credits?

No. Read-only blocks changes, and in Modash the only changes are to AI search lists. Searches, reports and lookups read data, so they stay available and spend credits as usual. Modash's API reference describes no spending cap for a token, so choose which AI clients get this connection, and ask the AI to check get_account_info before a large job.

Does it return personal data?

Yes, some. Reports and email lookups can include creators' contact details, which is part of what Modash sells, and audience data comes back as percentages rather than as people. Modash says it does not store the email addresses you look up. Whether you may use the results for outreach depends on your own legal basis, so check that before you contact anyone.

Which parts of the Modash API are left out?

One endpoint: the older TikTok media download, which returns a video file a tool cannot carry and which Modash has deprecated. The tool that returns a download link replaces it. Three Instagram routes that exist but appear in no published reference are also left out, because their parameters would be a guess.

Do I have to run or host the Modash MCP server myself?

No. PopMCP hosts it and gives you a Streamable HTTP MCP URL. There is nothing to deploy, no callback URL to register, and no infrastructure to keep running or patch.

Which AI clients can use this MCP server?

Any client that supports a remote Streamable HTTP MCP server: Claude Desktop, Claude Web, Claude Code, ChatGPT custom connectors, Codex and the Codex CLI, OpenCode and Z.ai's ZCode, as well as editors such as Cursor, Windsurf and Zed. Your client signs in to PopMCP with OAuth; the provider credential never leaves the server.

How do I connect Modash to Claude Code?

Connect Modash in PopMCP first, then run claude mcp add --transport http popmcp https://app.popmcp.com/mcp in a terminal. Inside Claude Code, run /mcp and sign in to PopMCP in the browser window it opens, ticking Modash on the consent screen. The Modash tools are then available in that session, and no Modash credential is stored on your machine.

Why do only 36 of the 90 tools load by default?

Loading 90 tool definitions into every conversation burns context before the work starts. What is the difference between a tool and a trigger?
