Meltwater MCP server questions

What teams ask before putting Meltwater behind an AI client.

What do I need to connect Meltwater?

A Meltwater package with API access and an API token. Meltwater's guide lists MI Advanced, Social Essentials, Social Advanced, Essentials Suite and Advanced Suite as including access. Making a token takes Admin level for the Meltwater API permission. If you are unsure, your account manager can confirm.

Do all the tools work on every package?

No. Listening, Explore+, owned social, AI Visibility, Mira, data streams and influencer campaigns depend on what your contract includes. A tool for something you do not have answers with an error, and the account overview tool shows the AI what is there.

Will this use up my Meltwater allowances?

Yes, the same as any API use. Each document from a search, export or data stream counts toward the month, and search and analytics calls count toward the day. Plans with included access have 30,000 documents and 50 exports a month and 50 search and analytics calls a day, and a contract can set others. The AI can read your usage, and the export tool samples 1,000 documents unless you ask for more.

Why does an export take so long?

Meltwater runs one export at a time, and a large one can take up to an hour. PopMCP waits briefly, then gives the AI the export's id so it can check later without starting another one.

Can the AI read the exported data?

Yes for JSON exports, a page of rows at a time, with long article text cut short. CSV and XLSX exports and files over 20 MB come back as a link for you to open.

I work across several Meltwater companies. How does that work?

If your token reaches more than one company, you choose which one each connection is for, and each goes in its own PopMCP workspace. Exports, data streams, usage and influencer tools have no company setting at Meltwater, so those show everything the token can see.

Can it send mentions to my own systems as they arrive?

Yes, if your contract includes data streaming. The AI can create a data stream for a saved search with your web address. Meltwater deletes a stream if the address stops answering for about 25 minutes, and emails you when it does.

Do I have to run or host the Meltwater MCP server myself?

No. PopMCP hosts it and gives you a Streamable HTTP MCP URL. There is nothing to deploy, no callback URL to register, and no infrastructure to keep running or patch.

Which AI clients can use this MCP server?

Any client that supports a remote Streamable HTTP MCP server: Claude Desktop, Claude Web, Claude Code, ChatGPT custom connectors, Codex and the Codex CLI, OpenCode and Z.ai's ZCode, as well as editors such as Cursor, Windsurf and Zed. Your client signs in to PopMCP with OAuth; the provider credential never leaves the server.

How do I connect Meltwater to Claude Code?

Connect Meltwater in PopMCP first, then run claude mcp add --transport http popmcp https://app.popmcp.com/mcp in a terminal. Inside Claude Code, run /mcp and sign in to PopMCP in the browser window it opens, ticking Meltwater on the consent screen. The Meltwater tools are then available in that session, and no Meltwater credential is stored on your machine.

Why do only 39 of the 98 tools load by default?

Loading 98 tool definitions into every conversation burns context before the work starts. PopMCP loads a curated 39-tool set covering the everyday workflows and keeps the rest searchable, so your AI pulls a specialist tool only when a task needs it. Every tool stays searchable, and on Scale the owner can load the full catalog for a teammate's connection.

What is the difference between a tool and a trigger?

A tool is something your AI calls, and there are 98 here. A trigger is something PopMCP watches for you: 7 Meltwater events that can start work on the PopMCP side. Triggers never enter your AI client's context, and none of them ask you to paste a callback URL into Meltwater.
