What teams ask before putting Mailgun behind an AI client.

Which Mailgun API key do I need to connect Mailgun to Claude or ChatGPT?

An Account API key, created in Mailgun under API Security with Add new key. Admin reaches every tool, Developer covers everything except API keys, SMTP credentials and users, and Analyst is read-only. A Domain Sending Key also connects if you type its domain, but then only send_message and send_mime_message work, for that one domain. PopMCP checks a sending key with an empty request, so nothing is sent while you connect.

Does it work if my Mailgun domains are in the EU region?

Yes, and you never pick a region. When you connect, PopMCP lists your domains on both the US host (api.mailgun.net) and the EU host (api.eu.mailgun.net) and records which region holds each one. Every call that names a domain goes to that domain's region, which avoids the "Domain not found" Mailgun returns from the wrong host. A domain added after you connect is looked up the first time a tool uses it.

How does the Mailgun send tool know which domain to send from?

It reads the from address. send_message sends through the matching Mailgun domain, including the common setup where hello@acme.com sends through mg.acme.com, and other domain tools fall back to your default sending domain. Friendly fields such as tags, reply_to, template_variables and deliverytime in ISO 8601 are converted to Mailgun's o:, h: and v: form fields. testmode: true has Mailgun accept a message without delivering it.

How can I see why a Mailgun email wasn't delivered?

By reading the events for that message. list_events filters by recipient, message-id, subject, tag and event type (delivered, failed, opened and so on), and get_page follows the paging.next link Mailgun returns for longer histories. get_stored_message fetches the email itself from the event's storage URL, which Mailgun keeps for your plan's retention, about 3 days by default. If a bounce is blocking the address, delete_bounce lets mail to it be attempted again.

Can one PopMCP connection work inside my Mailgun subaccounts?

No. A connection is one Mailgun account. From the parent key, list_subaccounts, create_subaccount and delete_subaccount manage subaccounts, but PopMCP never acts inside a subaccount on the parent's key. To work inside one, create an API key in that subaccount and connect it in its own PopMCP workspace, since each workspace holds one Mailgun connection.

Which Mailgun events can PopMCP watch?

17 in total. Eight come from Mailgun webhooks: email accepted, delivered, delivery delayed, failed, opened, link clicked, recipient unsubscribed and marked as spam. Change detection covers a sending domain added, mailing list created, inbound route created, template created, API key created and dedicated IP added. Three thresholds fire when the bounce rate or spam complaints climb past your level, or this month's sends near the account's custom sending limit.

Do I have to run or host the Mailgun MCP server myself?

No. PopMCP hosts it and gives you a Streamable HTTP MCP URL. There is nothing to deploy, no callback URL to register, and no infrastructure to keep running or patch.
