Gusto MCP server questions

What teams ask before putting Gusto behind an AI client.

What do I need to connect Gusto?

A Gusto login with primary or full-access admin rights. You sign in on Gusto's own page and pick the company, so your password is never shared. If PopMCP's form asks for a Client ID and Secret, it is waiting on PopMCP's Gusto sign-in being switched on: you can use your own application from dev.gusto.com in the meantime, but a new one is a Demo app with test data only, and Gusto approves production apps for its software partners, not for a customer's own systems.

Can it connect several companies?

One connection is one company, because each Gusto sign-in is tied to the single company you pick on Gusto's page. To work with another company, connect it in another PopMCP workspace. A call naming a different company is refused.

Can the AI see Social Security numbers and bank details?

They come back masked to the last four digits in every answer, along with EINs and I-9 document numbers, and this cannot be turned off. Pay rates, addresses and dates of birth are visible to the AI if Gusto gives them to the connection, so connect it only to AI clients you trust with payroll data.

Can it run payroll?

Through Sign in with Gusto, Gusto's own MCP server offers payroll tools, which the AI reaches with gusto_list_official_tools and gusto_call_official_tool once write actions are allowed. Over the REST API Gusto keeps submitting a payroll to its Embedded partners. Putting hours and earnings on a payroll with gusto_update_payroll never runs it, so a person can review it in Gusto first.

Why do some tools say Gusto Embedded apps only?

Gusto keeps those endpoints, such as bank accounts, tax setup, forms and contractor payments, for its Embedded payroll partners and refuses them on other connections. They are listed so a partner connecting their own app can use them. When one is refused, the answer explains why and what to try instead.

Does it cost extra?

Gusto charges no separate fee to connect it to an AI tool. What you can reach follows your Gusto plan and your admin role.

Can PopMCP tell me when something changes in Gusto?

Yes. PopMCP can watch for employees and contractors being added or changed, payrolls being processed, time off requests, and new departments and locations, with nothing to set up in Gusto.

Do I have to run or host the Gusto MCP server myself?

No. PopMCP hosts it and gives you a Streamable HTTP MCP URL. There is nothing to deploy, no callback URL to register, and no infrastructure to keep running or patch.

Which AI clients can use this MCP server?

Any client that supports a remote Streamable HTTP MCP server: Claude Desktop, Claude Web, Claude Code, ChatGPT custom connectors, Codex and the Codex CLI, OpenCode and Z.ai's ZCode, as well as editors such as Cursor, Windsurf and Zed. Your client signs in to PopMCP with OAuth; the provider credential never leaves the server.

How do I connect Gusto to Claude Code?

Connect Gusto in PopMCP first, then run claude mcp add --transport http popmcp https://app.popmcp.com/mcp in a terminal. Inside Claude Code, run /mcp and sign in to PopMCP in the browser window it opens, ticking Gusto on the consent screen. The Gusto tools are then available in that session, and no Gusto credential is stored on your machine.

Why do only 41 of the 333 tools load by default?

Loading 333 tool definitions into every conversation burns context before the work starts.
