Where it works
How PopMCP connects to OpenAI dots
OpenAI dots are always-on agents inside ChatGPT, launched on 29 September 2026. A dot can use supported plugins installed and enabled for your ChatGPT account, and ChatGPT adds a remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) server as a plugin at chatgpt.com/plugins. PopMCP is a hosted MCP server that puts 100+ business tools behind one URL, https://app.popmcp.com/mcp, so one plugin reaches every tool you connect in PopMCP. One caveat up front: OpenAI's dots docs do not say whether a custom MCP plugin counts as "supported". Two vendors report live tests where a dot used one.
ChatGPT on the web
SupportedWeb · chatgpt.com/plugins
Add PopMCP as a custom MCP server at chatgpt.com/plugins, with Developer mode on. OpenAI says your dot can use supported plugins installed for your account.
ChatGPT desktop app
Not documentedmacOS, Windows
Create and talk to your dot here or on desktop web. OpenAI documents adding custom MCP servers only in ChatGPT on the web, so add PopMCP there. Plugin permissions are shared across your account.
ChatGPT mobile app
Not availableiPhone, Android
You cannot add PopMCP here: OpenAI says MCP apps are web only, and dots are created on desktop. Once mobile access reaches your account, you can message your dot from the app. It still works in the cloud with your account's plugins.
Slack, Teams and texting
Not availableSlack, Microsoft Teams, texting where available
These channels only carry messages to and from your dot. OpenAI says adding a contact method does not grant app access, so PopMCP is managed in ChatGPT, not here.
Dots API
Not documentedNone published
OpenAI's docs do not describe an API for dots. Specialist dots, which take on set roles inside a company, are enterprise pilots that OpenAI's engineers set up with each organization.

Setup
Connect PopMCP to OpenAI dots, step by step
Two parts, in order: add PopMCP to ChatGPT on the web, then check your dot can use it.
OpenAI documents adding a custom MCP server only in ChatGPT on the web. You add PopMCP once, and plugin permissions are shared across dots, ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex.
Connect your tools in PopMCP
Sign in at app.popmcp.com, connect Shopify, Stripe or any other tool, and check each one shows as Verified.
Turn on Developer mode
On Pro, turn it on in your ChatGPT settings. OpenAI's help article does not give the exact screen for Pro. On Business Premium, only admins and owners can, under Settings → Apps → Advanced settings → Developer mode. On Enterprise or Edu, an admin grants it under Permissions & Roles → Connected Data, then you turn it on in Settings → Apps → Advanced Settings.
Add PopMCP as a custom MCP server
Go to chatgpt.com/plugins, select the plus (+) button, then Add custom MCP server. Name it PopMCP and, under Connection, paste the URL below as the Server URL. There is no API key or token to paste.
MCP server URLhttps://app.popmcp.com/mcpChoose OAuth and create the plugin
Choose OAuth for authentication, review the risk warning and select I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin. When the PopMCP sign-in opens, tick only the connectors your dot should reach, then approve.
Publish it for a workspace
On Business Premium or Enterprise, OpenAI's developer mode article says teammates only see a custom app after an admin or owner publishes it, under Workspace settings → Apps → Drafts → Publish. On Pro, skip this step.
OpenAI says a dot can use supported plugins installed and enabled for your account, and documents no separate install step. Create the dot on desktop, then check it can see PopMCP.
Create your dot on desktop
Create your dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or in ChatGPT on desktop web, and follow the onboarding prompts. You cannot create a dot on mobile.
Check that your dot sees PopMCP
OpenAI's dots docs do not confirm custom MCP plugins, so check before you rely on it. Ask your dot to run list_connections. It lists the connectors it was granted.
Try this promptRun list_connections from PopMCP and tell me which tools you can use.Set what it may do on its own
Your ChatGPT app permissions apply to your dot. For extra limits, open Settings → Personalization → Custom rules. Each rule takes one of Take action without asking, Take action when you say so, Ask before taking action, or Hand off to you.
Give it a recurring check
Ask for a read-only report on a schedule. Include the time zone and ask your dot to confirm the schedule. Scheduled runs appear in the conversation, and you can manage them from your dot's profile.
Try this promptEvery weekday at 8 am Eastern, send me yesterday's Shopify sales and any failed Stripe payments. Confirm the schedule.

OAuth sign-in, no API keys
Your dot signs in to PopMCP with OAuth 2.1. There is nothing to paste, and your Shopify or Stripe credentials stay encrypted inside PopMCP.
You pick the connectors
The PopMCP consent screen lists your connections. Your dot reaches only the ones you tick.
Read-only where you want it
A workspace owner or admin sets each teammate to no access, read, or read and write, per connection.

Good to know
Before you connect OpenAI dots
OpenAI dots launched in September 2026, and its documentation is still changing. Here is what is not settled yet.
Custom MCP for dots is not documented
OpenAI's dots docs say a dot can use "supported plugins" installed for your account. They do not say whether a custom MCP server added in Developer mode counts. Marqeable (30 Sep 2026) and ClawCall (4 Oct 2026) report live tests where it did. PopMCP has not been tested with a dot.
Pro is read-only for custom MCP
On Pro, custom MCP servers get read and fetch tools only. Write actions through a custom MCP server need Business, Enterprise or Edu. On Business, only admins and owners can turn on Developer mode.
Plans and regions
Dots are on Pro outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, and on Business Premium. Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare get a beta that a workspace admin has to turn on. Dots are rolling out gradually, so access can take several days to reach your account.
Add it on the web, not mobile
OpenAI says MCP apps are web only. Add PopMCP on chatgpt.com. Slack, Teams and texting only carry messages to your dot and do not grant app access.
Background research only reads
When your dot looks for updates on its own, its tools cannot change content through plugins. Any change it makes after that goes through your app permissions, custom rules and approval checks.
Common questions
OpenAI dots and PopMCP FAQ
Can an OpenAI dot use an MCP server?
A dot uses the plugins installed and enabled on your ChatGPT account, and ChatGPT adds a custom MCP server as a plugin. OpenAI's dots docs say only "supported plugins" and do not confirm custom MCP plugins. Two vendors, Marqeable and ClawCall, report live tests where a dot used one.
How do I add PopMCP to my dot?
Turn on Developer mode, go to chatgpt.com/plugins, select the plus (+) button, then Add custom MCP server. Name it PopMCP, enter https://app.popmcp.com/mcp, choose OAuth, select Create as a plugin and approve the PopMCP sign-in. Then ask your dot to run list_connections.
Do I set up PopMCP separately for my dot?
No separate step is documented. OpenAI says plugin permissions are shared across dots, ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex. Ask your dot to run list_connections to confirm it can see PopMCP.
Do I need an API key to connect my dot to PopMCP?
No. ChatGPT cannot send custom API keys, and PopMCP does not use them. It signs in with OAuth 2.1, and your Shopify, Stripe or QuickBooks credentials stay encrypted inside PopMCP.
Can my dot change data in my tools, or only read it?
On Pro, custom MCP servers get read and fetch tools only. On Business, Enterprise and Edu, full MCP with write actions is in beta. In PopMCP, a workspace owner or admin can also set each teammate to no access, read, or read and write per connection.
Which ChatGPT plans include dots?
Pro outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, and Business Premium. Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces get a beta that an admin has to turn on.
Can I add PopMCP from the ChatGPT mobile app, Slack or Teams?
No. OpenAI says MCP apps are web only, and Slack, Teams and texting are only ways to message your dot. Add PopMCP on chatgpt.com, then talk to your dot wherever you like.
Is it safe to give my dot access to my store?
You control it in two places. In PopMCP, tick only the connectors your dot needs and keep teammates on read-only where possible. In ChatGPT, app permissions and custom rules decide what the dot may do without asking. OpenAI says disconnecting a plugin does not delete what your dot already learned from it; only deleting the dot does. Start with read-only requests.
