What teams ask before putting Trello behind an AI client.

Do I need an OAuth app or client secret to connect Trello?

No. You generate an API Key in the Trello Power-Up admin, click the Token link to authorize a Token for your own account, and paste those two values into the connect form's API Key and Token fields. There is no OAuth app, redirect URL, client secret, or re-authentication step. Calls run server-side over HTTPS, with the key and token passed as query params.

Which boards and Workspaces can the agent reach?

The Token is scoped to your own Trello account, so the server can reach every board and Workspace (organization) you belong to — no more, no less. A board you are not a member of stays invisible to the agent. If your account spans several Workspaces, the Members and Organizations tools let it walk from you to your Workspaces to the boards inside them.

How many Trello operations does the server expose?

254 operations across 18 API modules, split 125 read and 129 write. Members, Cards and Boards are the largest modules, followed by Organizations (Workspaces) and Enterprises. 48 tools load into your AI client by default and the rest stay searchable, so the client is not flooded with calls you rarely make. There are also 22 triggers PopMCP can watch.

Can it work with checklists, custom fields and attachments, or only cards?

Cards are the center of it, but not the limit. Card-level coverage includes comments, members, labels, attachments, checklists and check items, custom field values and stickers, and beyond that there are boards, lists, labels, custom fields, members, Workspaces, search, notifications, actions, enterprises, tokens and webhooks. A board's custom field definitions come back from list_board_custom_fields, and update_card_custom_field_item writes the value on an individual card.

Which Trello changes can PopMCP watch for?

Triggers are webhook-based, so they fire when Trello pushes the change rather than on a polling delay. You can watch a card being created, updated, moved to another list, archived or deleted; comments added; members assigned to or removed from a card; attachments added; checklists added and checklist items ticked off or unticked; labels added or removed; and new lists created on a board.

What trips people up with the Trello API?

Two things. Checklist writes — creating a checklist, or creating a check item on one — expect their fields in the `query` argument rather than `body`, and the tool descriptions flag that where it applies. The other is that some operations do not come back: delete_card removes a card permanently and create_list_archive_all_card clears an entire list, which is why leaving approval on for writes is worth the extra click.

Do I have to run or host the Trello MCP server myself?
